About 800 years ago Riverisle was a sprawling outpost town secure on an island on the great Iskellion River. The ruler of Riverisle at that time, Lord Armeral, was very forward thinking, and recognized that there needed to be a form of justice outside the landed gentry, a group that common people could look to for protection, else they would despair in times of trouble or rebel against the landed nobles if oppressed. So he created the Silvernight Academy. The academy was a reflection of Riverisle, and acted in time as a conduit between the landed nobility and the general population, answerable to both in different ways. Academy members (known as SilverKnights) were responsible for protecting the citizenry from threats, external and internal. While nominally controlled by the nobility, they quickly became more independent, but careful not to tread too much into the areas of laws and politics, managed to create an uneasy peace with the nobles by providing a balance between the nobility and the people.
SilverKnights over the years have developed a reputation for fairness and care for the common people, and as a SilverKnight is a noble postion but all may apply for entrance into the Academy, it is a way for a commoner to become noble. While SilverKnights hold no land of their own, this is compensated by the great amount of wealth they have accumulated through the centuries.
